As we age, our metabolism slows down. That is no secret. So how do we stay fit when we are headed (or have already made it) over-the-hill?
Age is just a number and we can do a lot for ourselves to stay healthy and strong, even as we age. Regular exercise is key to long-term health. One of the best ways to keep your body healthy is by doing the following types of exercise.
Your heart is the most important part of your body. Therefore it should be exercised daily. Spend 20-30 minutes per day doing high-intensity cardio that elevates your heart rate and keeps it there. You can do this in intervals as you get started to build up endurance.
2. Resistance Training
Using your own weight to do resistance training is a great way to start. Try doing pull-ups, sit-ups, squats, lunges, and pushups to build your strength. Don’t worry about how many you can do at the beginning. Set a goal to do more than you did each time. Before you know it, you’ll be crushing your workout each day!
As we age, we become less flexible. This leads us to be more susceptible to injury. Doing yoga helps increase flexibility, release stress, and build strength. This age-old technique has been tried and tested. Don’t neglect it.
Just because we get older doesn’t mean we have to become weak and frail. Picking a workout routine and sticking to it is the best way to stay young, strong, and healthy, regardless of your age. Spend 30 minutes to an hour each day strengthening your body. Don’t worry about where you start, just push yourself a little harder each day.
Joining a gym is a low-cost, easy way to get access to equipment and instructors. However, there are ways to do workouts at home. There are tons of Youtube videos to help you along.
Staying strong and healthy provides a host of benefits including reducing the risk of heart disease, lowering blood pressure, and helping lose weight. Other ways of staying healthy to include visiting a chiropractor and regular check-ups. If you are in Florida, try visiting a chiropractor in Miami.
Whatever you choose, find a type of exercise and stick to it!
